Tiny Mobile Farm

At the beginning of 2020, SLP SEEDS became the recipients of the Minnesota Department of Agriculture - Urban Agriculture grant. This award was intended to create a tiny mobile farm! Due to COVID-19, the MDA graciously allowed us to transfer the funds from this grant to work on our COVID response efforts. We intend to apply again and look at avenues to make this project a reality!

Throughout the many community conversations we have had over the past couple of years, one continuous theme we have found is that there needs to be more outreach for the garden programs.  We know that it is not always within the capacity of an organization or apartment complex to have a garden. But now, with a Tiny Mobile Farm, we would be able to bring the farm to residents!

The original goals of the project were to do 5-10 events in different neighborhoods or apartment complexes during the growing season. These events would have:

  • an educational component about nutrition and ways people can grow in small spaces;

  • a meal component where residents will get to eat a healthy, fresh-food delicious meal;

  • a free fresh-foods distribution component; and

  • a community engagement component where we will continue the conversation about what residents need in the city in order to thrive. Hopefully, these conversations will activate a community that can work together on a Food Action Plan for the city.
